Nordic Committee for Art History 2006-2009
The committee consists of two members from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, and one substitute from each country. Iceland is presently not represented in the committee. Members of the committee are appointed by the general assembly of Nordic Committe for Art History for a period of three years. The general assembly usually takes place in connection with the Nordic Congress for the History of Art, which takes place every third year in one of the Nordic countries. The present committee was appointed by the general assembly that took place in connection with NORDIK 2006 in Bergen, Norway.

Jørgen Bakke, Chairman
|
JØRGEN BAKKE (Norway), Chairman of NORDIK 2006-2009, is Senior Lecturer in Art History at the Department of Literary, Linguistic and Aesthetic Studies at the University of Bergen. Bakke’s research interests include cultural landscape studies (especially in Greece and in the Eastern Mediterranean), ancient Greek art and architecture, visual culture studies, 19th and early 20th century photography, and the geohistory of art. Bakke is a member of the board of the Stenersen Foundation that owns the Rolf Stenersen collection of modern art at Bergen Art Museum, and he is substitute to the board of the Norwegian Institute at Athens. He is a member of the interdisciplinary research group The Norwegian Arcadia Survey that studies the cultural landscape of Tegea in Arcadia, Greece, and he is a member of a local research group in Visual Culture at the University of Bergen. Bakke is presently working with the preparation of a new BA specialisation course in "Landscape and the visualisation of nature" due to start in January 2009 at the University of Bergen.

Mai Britt Guleng

MAI BRITT GULENG (Norway), member of NORDIK 2006-2009, is Senior Curator at the Munch Museum in Oslo. Her research is primarily directed towards 19th century Norwegian art and historiography as in "Lorentz Dietrichson – Ibsen’s Roman Cicerone" i Acta Ibseniana. Ibsen and the Arts: Painting – Sculpture – Architecture, 2001. Guleng has edited interdisciplinary publications in historiography like Utviklingsteorier og historiesyn: 15 vitenskapshistoriske studier (Forum for universitetshistorie, Universitetet i Oslo 2001). In 2007 Guleng curated a large exhibition with works by Egon Schiele at the Munch Museum in Oslo. She is project manager for Edvard Munchs tekster – Forskning og publisering 2007-2010. This project will be published in the form of an on-line database in the fall of 2010.

Annika Waenerberg

ANNIKA WAENERBERG (Finland), member of NORDIK 2006-2009, works, after a museum career in Turku and Joensuu 1976–1999, since 1.1.2000 as Professor of Art History at the Department of Arts and Culture Studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. She is also associate professor (docent) in art history at the University of Oulu (1994) and the University Åbo Akademi (1995). She is at the moment a Suppleant Deputy Member of Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art (CIHA), Member of the Board of The Foundation for Promotion of Cultural Policy Research (CUPORE) in Finland, Member of the Board of Finnish Cultural Foundation and since 2005 Ordinary member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. To her research areas belong the organic in art, artists’ travels, landscape and methodology. Waenerberg is the project manager of Nordic Conference for the History of Art, which will take place in Jyväskylä, Finland, in 2009.

Susanna Petterson

SUSANNA PETTERSON (Finland), member of NORDIK 2006-2009, is Head of Development at the Finnish National Gallery. Petterson is specialised in museum history and collection studies, and she has published widely on the subject. Her latest book featured art collecting in 19th century Finland. Before joining the Finnish National Gallery in 1992 she worked in several Finnish museums. At her current post as Head of Development at the Finnish National Gallery she is responsible for research and development projects ranging from museum history to collection management. She’s the Chair of the EU Collection Mobility / Loan fees and Long term Loans –working group. She’s also a board member of the Finnish Museums’ Association.

Jeff Werner
|
JEFF WERNER (Sweden), member of NORDIK 2006-2009, is Director of Research at Göteborg Museum of Art. Werner has recently been studying how visual culture contributes to the construction of stereotypes and preconceptions about nations, regions and ethnic groups. His ongoing research concerns the museum as a co-producer of ethnic identities. Werner is also a Professor at Gotland University and a teacher at a two-year education for professional picture framers in Tranås, Sweden.

Anne-Louise Sommer

ANNE-LOUISE SOMMER (Denmark), member of NORDIK 2006-2009, is Head of Research Department and Associate Professor at The Danish Design School (DKDS). Sommer’s research in Design Theory addresses the historical and methodological dimension taking as a starting point that design is part of the cultural studies tradition, and the object of studies belongs to an extended design concept. Lately her research has been focusing at the development of the modern, secular metropolitan cemetery since 1800. She is also engaged in the theory and aesthetics of gardening and landscape design in practice and philosophy in France and Britain in 18th Century intellectual history. She has experience within research and teaching from different Universities and a Research Centre in Denmark. Her professional focus is characterised by an interdisciplinary position within the humanities relating primarily to Art History, Aesthetic Studies and Cultural Studies. Sommer has been a member of the NORDIK since 2003. From 2003-2006 she was the Chairman.

Peter Nørgaard Larsen

PETER NØRGAARD LARSEN (Denmark), member of NORDIK 2006-2009, is Senior Research Curator and Head of Research at Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen. Primary sphere of interest: The exchanges between Danish and European 19th century art. Curated the exhibition Symbolism in Danish and European Painting 1870-1910 in 2000 and in 2006 L.A. Ring. On the Edge of the World. Co-curated the exhibitions Danish Sculpture in 125 Years (1996), Strindberg. Painter and Photographer (2001), Impressionism and the North (2003), A Mirror of Nature. Nordic Landscape Painting 1840-1910 (2006-07). Has written articles on e.g. Carl Bloch, Puvis de Chavannes, Julius Lange, L.A. Ring, Joakim Skovgaard, vitalism, Danish Impressionism and Postimpressionism, Scandinavian evocative painting, the history of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts 1850-1900. Co-editor of Viljen til det menneskelige. Tekster omkring Julius Lange (1999), editor of SMK Highlights (2005) and of SMK Art Journal 2003-.

ELI HELDAAS SELAND (Norway), substitute to NORDIK 2006-2009, is PhD student at the Department of Literary, Linguistic and Aesthetic Studies at the University of Bergen, and employed by Bergen Museum, Cultural History Collections, Coins & Medals. Her PhD project is a study of 19th-century popular imagery concerning Marian Apparitions, with special attention to devotional medals. Research interests include narrativity and rhetoric of images, visual culture, medals, material culture, Mariology, religious images and devotional practices.

LEILA TUULI (Finland), substitute to NORDIK 2006-2009, is PhD student and Lecturer in art history and museology at Åbo Akademi University. Tuuli’s interests include art history in combination with museology, museology, exhibitions and exhibition techniques. Since 1999 she has worked with Carl-Gustaf Lilius art collection, and she has been a member of Carl-Gustaf Lilius foundation since 2002.

HANS DAM CHRISTENSEN (Denmark), substitute to NORDIK 2006-2009, is PhD and Associate Professor at the Department of Cultural and Media Studies, Royal School of Library and Information Science in Copenhagen. He is committee member of The Danish Association of Art Historians, founding editor of the academic journal Periskop. Forum for kunsthistorisk debat, member of the organising comittee of Nordic Network for Visual Culture and Novo Nordisk Foundation Art History Project 2003-2008.

Nomination for Nordic Committee for Art History 2009-2012
GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF NORDIK 2009
The general assembly of NORDIK will ajourn on Saturday 19. September, in connection with the 2009 conference at Jyväskylä. The Chairman of Nordic Committee for Art History, Jørgen Bakke, will present the work of the committee from 2006 to 2009. The general assembly also elects Nordic Committee for Art History for the period 2009-2012. According to the guidelines for the committee NORDIK’s general assembly is made up of the participants at the Jyväskylä conference, and all participants can vote in the election of the new committee.
The electorial committee for Nordic Committee for Art History 2009-2012 is Senior Curator Mai Britt Guleng, Munchmuseet, Oslo, Norway. Other members of the electorial committee are Anne-Louise Sommer (Denmark), Maria Görts (Sweden), and Johanna Vakkari (Finland). NORDIK 2009 REGISTRATION
Mind and Matter – Nordik 2009 Conference for Art Historians will take place 17th – 19th of September 2009, in Jyväskylä, Finland. The conference is organized by the Department of Art and Culture Studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Nordik Committee for Art History and The Society for Art History in Finland.
The conference venues are the main building of the University of Jyväskylä (Seminaarinmäki campus area, building C) designed by Alvar Aalto and the Fennicum building.
